Individual Relationship Counseling

Relationships are very hard and take a lot of work. This is very true if you have a history of abusive or codependent relationships. You may have found that issues from your past creep up and affect your present relationship. Or, you always worry about abandonment. You might often push others away because you don’t want to be hurt again.
This is very understandable. It’s a normal response to the anxiety and relationship trauma you’ve experienced. In this case, individual relationship counseling can support you in creating healthy relationships.
Individual relationship counseling can help if you…
Are recently divorced
- Sabotage your relationships before they get serious
- Feel scared to date
- Are healing from an abusive relationship
- Feel a sense of shame or have poor self-esteem
- Have a history of dysfunctional family dynamics
- Experience frequent conflict with friends and family
- Let your perfectionist tendencies harm your present relationships
- Are in a relationship (romantic or other) with a narcissist
- Are in a codependent relationship
- Feel like you’re primed for run or fight at the first sign of conflict
What is Individual Relationship Counseling and Who Does it Help?
Individual relationship counseling in North Carolina is for any individual in any kind of relationship. In short, it’s for everyone. Individual relationship counseling can support you in building healthy relationships. Whether they be romantic, friendly, and family relationships.
During individual relationship counseling, a counselor will help you understand how past pain affects present relationships. Then you will work at unpacking that baggage, organize it, and put it away in a safe place. Although it may never truly go away, you can confront it in a way that allows you to move forward and find happiness.
My Approach to Online Therapy to Overcome Relationship Challenges
I want you to feel safe and comfortable talking to me about the concerns that are bringing you to online therapy. In fact, it is my primary goal. To help build a healthy therapeutic relationship with you, I will begin our work together by helping you feel secure. We will also discuss the resources you have in your life that help you deal with the pain and distress you’re experiencing.
Then, I will listen to you and hear your concerns. If these are hard for you to talk about, I understand. I will help support you and keep you grounded, even if you feel uncomfortable. To help you understand and process what happened, I may also recommend that you journal. I can also offer you prompts to help you think about what to write. You’ll find that this helps you gain insight into where your challenges are coming from. This helps you deal with these things so you don’t have to be as bothered by them in the future.
Getting “Unstuck” With Brainspotting
If you’re feeling stuck in the past, unable to embrace the present, then I may suggest you try Brainspotting. I offer this service to online therapy clients. It helps them access memories that are stuck in the emotional side of the brain and causing pain.
It’s believed that people move their eyes in certain ways when describing their distress. But a trained Brainspotting professional can help them position their eyes to target negative emotions as they talk. We call these targets Brainspots. This helps them unlock the negative emotions so they can be completely processed. Thus, allowing clients to move forward.
